Artist Statement for Bruce Hill

If learning comes from within oneself then it is something you own, cherish and nuture. If it comes entirely from outside ourselves then it remains a foreign concept and will be used only when necessary and if unused for any length of time it is soon forgotten.
As real artists we can only speak the truth through our work, the truth within our own being. As Human (fragile, doomed) and Being (enlightened, at One) we are taking a long journey and the artist's work is an important map for all on that journey.
The artist paints a map of his/her inner life and others recognize aspects of that truth in their struggle and we learn and we learn.
My journey is about journeys and learning.
I've lived in about 30 different addresses and am currently living in the hot bed of the Middle East. I am also a teacher of art and a leader of a different art groups wherever I go. Art, sharing and the pursuit of truth are my life.
In 1988 I starting painting in the round after much study and meditation on the oneness and wholeness of this creation we are all part of. I manufactured unique aluminium tube frames with canvas stretched over and have used them off and on ever since. We live on a globe in an ever expanding universe. There are no cubic planets out there, so it seemed right to paint in a circular format.
Man made squares and rectangles keep us controlled and divided, border focused and center weak. Globes and circles, however, have flexible boundaries and strong centers. To me that is the ideal to pursue, a person with a strong heart and soul certain of his/her oneness with Being and happy to accept and negotiate his/her boundaries with other souls.
As Jim Morrison of the Doors said "(Mankind) has covered the earth with fences and tied her down".
Now is the time to stop square thinking and embrace the global and universal reality of roundness and wholeness.
