Artist Statement for Amy Redmond

ABOUT
Amy Redmond began focusing on letterpress printing in 1998 shortly after meeting letterpress printers Chris Stern and Jules Remedios Faye of Stern & Faye, Printers. Since then she has apprenticed with them in their letterpress print shop, drawing her inspiration and bizarre tales from their impressive collection of metal and wood type and imagery.
Amy's method for creating her letterpress pieces is often spontaneous, with concepts beginning with one simple character, such as the big number 5 in her broadside "Numb'r Crunch'r". Add to that an old half-tone of an anonymous man, and the threads of the story begin to be woven together.
This laid-back style of working is a preferred departure from the manner in which her design work (http://amyredmond.com) develops, free of the limitations that can unintentionally be placed by clients. Although the process of locking up and printing type well can be one that tests the boundaries of patience, its limitations -- like that of any medium -- can also push the boundaries of creativity.
In addition to setting up a letterpress shop in her home studio, Amy also teaches letterpress printing classes at Seattle's School of Visual Concepts. She graduated in 1996 from James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA) with a BFA degree in graphic design. Both her design and letterpress work have been shown in various group shows over the past few years.
