Artist Statement for Alan Ticheler

I tend to look for simplicity in light and line. While there are certainly those instances where more is required, so much can be achieved with just a single light and yet you constantly fight the urge to overcomplicate an image. For me the goal is to show something more than the sum of the parts, something from within, but the challenge is to allow that to come naturally from the subject without my making it overly obvious. With nudes, for example, I try to look for visually compelling lines and shapes when I see the model and to concentrate more on the aesthetic than the sensual. Concepts such as strength, innocence, frailty or even sensuality are things I leave for the model to convey and for the viewer to contemplate. Certain lines and poses may suggest certain things, but you can’t force the issue. Working largely with amateur models, I find that there is real beauty in real people and I think that when you allow it to flow naturally from the subject, that is when the lens can truly capture the soul.
