Artist Statement:
Happy Mascots!

Mascots are ubiquitous
creatures in Asia. Practically
ever municipality, festival,
or institution has one,
including the police
departments of Seoul
(“Podari”) and Tokyo
(“Pipo-Kun”). They can be
animals, humans, or some
anthropomorphic collision of
the two.

From the myriad of forms
mascots come in I depict their
“archetypical” features in a
manner that puts them on the
threshold of abstraction,
setting up an interplay
between these vernacular
characters and the traditions
of abstract painting.

The geometric shapes (ovals,
diamonds, hexagons, and so on)
serve to bring together the
disparate imagery as a
cohesive body of work and
sometimes allude to parts of
the figure while remaining
abstract. Additionally, the
images often include Asian
motifs (gourd shapes,
ornamental designs from royal
artifacts, and so on).
