Artist Statement for Ann Hamilton

My students say they learn the most by watching me work. My style is that of allowing the subject matter of the painting to direct me. I have an idea, such as a landscape or a seascape, but the painting, like a work of fiction in a literary piece, takes on a life of its' own. It often appears to be telling me what to do. That is what challenges me most. When I place colors onto paper, canvas, or panel, a vision of the painting soon begins to take shape in my mind. Once I decide on a focal point, the development of the painting proceeds much like that of the development of characters in a fictitious novel. Whether it's in the classroom, my studio, or during workshops that I conduct, I am always being surprised.
As a young child, I knew in my heart that I was an artist. Early on the desire to express myself manifested itself in the written word. For more than 15 years I was a reporter and journalist-editor of community newspapers. Many times, during this period, my thoughts wondered to what course my life would have taken had I been a visual artist. Following my husband's death, in 1980, I decided to find out. Since that time, except for intervals when my attention was diverted, I have been on a fantastic journey discovering the answer to this question. It has been more fulfilling then anything in my life.
