Artist Statement:
Take I
I am a storyteller. I tell depict stories in in-the-middle-moments, whether it is the beginning, middle or end is left up to You. I tell stories to motivate, appease and remind myself of the stories that make me old and new.
Take II
The importance of story telling and the role of myth in contemporary society are the predominant concerns in my work. I invoke the serious side of play and the use of humour as a technique to discuss difficult subject matter. My images also reflect past histories in an attempt to slow societal amnesia as we are bombarded by more and more information.
Currently, I am interested in researching the circus, specifically, the circus as a metaphor for life. As an exaggerated reflection of society the circus is full of the bizarre, the death defying, the spectacular, where the socially marginalized are included and empowered. I want to explore notions of illusion and spectacle, performance and observation, light and shadow, as ways of understanding how society defines normality.
