Artist Statement for Anna Jane Mcintyre

Take I

I am a storyteller. I tell depict stories in in-the-middle-moments, whether it is the beginning, middle or end is left up to You. I tell stories to motivate, appease and remind myself of the stories that make me old and new.

Take II

The importance of story telling and the role of myth in contemporary society are the predominant concerns in my work. I invoke the serious side of play and the use of humour as a technique to discuss difficult subject matter. My images also reflect past histories in an attempt to slow societal amnesia as we are bombarded by more and more information.

Currently, I am interested in researching the circus, specifically, the circus as a metaphor for life. As an exaggerated reflection of society the circus is full of the bizarre, the death defying, the spectacular, where the socially marginalized are included and empowered. I want to explore notions of illusion and spectacle, performance and observation, light and shadow, as ways of understanding how society defines normality.

In my recent work I am experimenting with print media to create installations. At Concordia I am exploring the crossover of the 2-dimensional and the 3-dimensional, manipulating space and atmosphere through printwork, while incorporating other artistic disciplines: performance, sound, light and movement (automata). Also, I am experimenting with combining the different print mediums and expanding my knowledge, especially in colour printing.

My work is informed by reference to the following: Guy Debord’s Society of the Spectacle and his philosophies on the role of illusion in contemporary society; Joseph Campbell’s theories on mythology; Carl Jung’s ideas on the role of the shadow; the Banraku, Japanese puppet
theatre for adults; Nang Yai, shadow puppet theatre in Thailand; David Hockney’s ideas about the depiction of time; Fluxus artists and their views of art as a starting versus definitive point; Robert Irvine’s theories on the phenomenology of artwork; records of carnival life through the ages, available through painting (e.g. Peter Breughel) and print (woodblock); Federico Fellini’s films with a circus theme such as La Dolce Vita, La Strada and 81/2; and the work of the following artists; Alexander Calder, Tom Dean, Nancy Spero, Sophie Calle, Annette Messager, Louise Bougeois, Andy Warhol and their use of repetition and installation.
