Artist Statement:
Whenever we look at something beautiful, like a landscape, rarely do we go past the immediate image before us. Rarely do we seek to understand the depth of its needs and even less often are we willing to take responsibility for tending to those needs. While in the painting, the viewer can let go of some of their perceptions of beauty and strength and come away with a greater understanding of their responsibility.
The textures of clay and paint convey the needs of the subject, the contrasts between the light and dark help define the depth and feeling of space; all of these work together to create a moment of fragile beauty. Finding the combination between the texture of the image and the message of the piece, the viewer is encouraged to enter the picture
