Artist Statement for Ann Haaland
I paint with an abstract vocabulary, investigating and exploring the implied in nature, striving for a more intimate introspection of our world and our environment.
I aim to explore the truths of life in all its forms, finding relevancy and inspiration in the banal beauty right in front of us, particularly where it might be either too plain or even in decay. My process starts with taking an idea for an image and then working the materials to their most powerful and tactile expression. I always try to keep the work subtle, respecting the quiet reality that is my muse.
In this way I am responding to the negativity and fear shouting at us in the media; speaking instead of possibilities, not absolutes. Beauty, sensuality and expression exist in the sublime, in things that sometimes appear to be insignificant or even totally absent. In other words, the future is not doomed. Nature provides us with a metaphor for faith, leading us to see the unseen.
