Artist Statement for Ann Marie Distefano

BIOGRAPHY OF ANN MARIE DISTEFANO

I was born in Boston, Massachusetts. I entered the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston with a full scholarship. I received my diploma in 1990 and then earned a Fifth Year Certificate in 1991. Throughout my studies I was awarded several awards in drawing and sculpture. My final year I was a recipient of the Fifth Year Traveling Scholars Award. In addition to my studies I have studied marble carving in Carrara, Italy and Hamar, Norway. I currently live in Tulsa, Oklahoma and work independently in my studio at A Gallery in downtown Tulsa.

Throughout my studies as a student I majored in sculpture. I worked with all kinds of materials to express myself and created sculptural installations. Finding different uses of materials was always new and a great passion for me.

All forms of art inspire me. I find beauty in everything I lay my eyes upon. Everything around me is about finding new materials to work with. When I find a material that moves me I play with it until I see a spirit in it that evolves in me. The approach and process is always tactile and usually obsessive. I like to work tactile so that when I am working, I feel like I am actually part of the work.

I am very drawn to the rawness, eccentricities and the absurdities of the unknown in both the materials I use and in life itself. I enjoy disguising materials to appear differently from what they really are which can be both difficult and fulfilling. For me I find it to be a great emotional and spiritual release. It is visible that I respond to my environment in and unconventional and graphic way.

My art speaks of my deep spiritual connection of both my inner and outer world that I exist in at these moments of my life.
