Reviews for Anthony Burks Sr.:
The revitalization efforts in West Palm Beach's historic Northwood neighborhood have been facilitated by the growth of its business district, and the opening of Expressive Vibes Art Gallery last fall is a stylish example of the area's recent boom. The afrocentric art displayed in this swank gallery is as diverse in form as it is in cultural origin. Works range from contemporary African-American paintings to Zimbabwean textiles, mud cloths, and tribal clothing; it's a well rounded mix of Pan African art, down to the smallest piece of furniture. Gallery owner Ike Powell works with African importers, as well as local and national artists like Northwood's own Anthony Burks, whose colored pencil and pen-and-ink drawings are a permanent fixture of Expressive Vibes. Burks' pieces include figures, masks, drums, toucans, African landscapes, and abstract dreamscapes that combine the real with the romantic. This is perhaps best shown in the colored pencil drawing Back to Basics (shown above). More abstract pieces include the light sculptures of Ulla Loba, which the artist created using driftwood, fiberglass, and miscellaneous found objects like barnacles and tiny metal figures. (Open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Expressive Vibes Art Gallery, 524 24th St., West Palm Beach. 561-832-3580) -- Jason Budjinski
