Artist Statement:
Memories of the kampung life
Kampung houses morping into the skyscrapers dominate AnuarDan’s latest paintings, a tale of papidly disappearing village life, told through mute tones of brown and yellow design that are almost abstract, glimpses of a vanishing world and declining arts.
With the kampung house series, however, Anuar seem to have come into his own.The complex theme - deconstructed houses, intricate architectural detail overlaid on household implements; shadowy people lurking, chatting in doorways - convays a sense of impermanence. Strongly vertical, the houses are surrounded by elongated doorways, cubes and windows, giving the impression that houses themselves are changing, that some time soon, they will have given way and become one of the increasingly ubiquitous skyscrapers.The shadowy figures, ghosts of people, emphasise this decline: it isn’t just buildings that are disappearing, but a way of life.
Anuar has cleverly put together local artifacts and the Malay architecture to give rise to works depicting the Malay heritage. His innovative use of mixed media and the effect of aging that he creates add charm to his works.
