Disappearing Worlds
AnuarDans fading villages
With the kampung house series, however, Anuar seem to have come into his own.The complex theme - deconstructed houses, intricate architectural detail overlaid on household implements; shadowy people lurking, chatting in doorways - convays a sense of impermanence. Strongly vertical, the houses are surrounded by elongated doorways, cubes and windows, giving the impression that houses themselves are changing, that some time soon, they will have given way and become one of the increasingly ubiquitous skyscrapers. The shadowy figures, ghosts of people, emphasise this decline: it isnt just buildings that are disappearing, but a way of life.
Anuar has cleverly put together local artifacts and the Malay architecture to give rise to works depicting the Malay heritage. His innovative use of mixed media and the effect of aging that he creates add charm to his works.
In the context of modern living his works are remainder of the days gone by. The quaint setting with the bicycle in some of his pieces brings back fond memories for many.
