Artist Statement for Andrew Meeder

|
My work, for the most part, is a mix of acrylic, oil bar, spray paint, crayon, etc. on heavy canvas. I like to start with raw, unprimed canvas, and build my work from that foundation. Most of my pieces are large in size - from 4ft. square up to 8ft. x 10ft. and larger.
My artistic approach was once comically described as ‘bipolar expressionism’ - sometimes calm and peaceful, and other times angry and aggressive. Regardless of one’s reaction to my work, each piece has its own life, and its own story to tell. My artistic inspiration comes from a very personal reaction to events in and around my life.
When I paint, the images that make their way onto the canvas are not premeditated, and are very much a progression of emotion and ideas. Some pieces take two days to reach their end, and others may be painted over many times, for months. As the moment changes, so does my work. When I get to a place where I feel the emotion or the idea was accurately recorded, that's when I stop myself.
Although I’ve painted for years, I’ve only recently begun to market my work more aggressively, and the response has been excellent. My works currently occupy space in private collections across the country as well as in Europe and Japan. A partial portfolio of my work can be seen on my website: www.apartwork.com
