Artist Statement:
Art should speak for itself, and it should speak to the viewer in the form of a discourse, not a lecture. As such, I don't have very much of a statement to make here.
I draw light, and my favorite subject is the human form. Anatomy provides very little room for error. We are so intimately familiar with faces and bodies that the slightest error shouts itself out. This is part of the challenge; but the reward is to illustrate just how beautiful the human body can be.
Be aware that scans of my drawings do not come across as soft as the original artwork - the light of the scan is reflected back and causes some harshness to appear that is not seen in the original....

| Your Personal Biography |
Stewart Parkinson was born in London, England in 1966. He grew up in both the UK as well as France. In high school he was streamed into language programs, and had to drop art lessons, never receiving any formal training.
After finishing his education, Stewart joined the vibrant world of 1980s advertising, and ended up working in sports marketing and management - he managed the 1991 NFL Europe London Monarchs, winning the first ever World Bowl. Having done so, he dropped out altogether and traveled across Africa for a year, studying Nigerian art at Oshogbo and living for a short while with the BaMbuti pygmies of the Congo. His trip started a love affair with Africa that led to him running a number of programs over the next 15 years in Nigeria, Cameroon and Zambia to combat HIV/AIDS.
Stewart moved permanently to the US in 2003, and works full-time on the politics and philosophy of aid, as well as creating mathematical models of the impact of development programs on poverty and health (this is a lot less interesting than it sounds...)
In his spare time he draws, plays classical guitar, and writes novels in an effort to try to stay at least a little sane (with three dogs and three kids, it is a bit difficult to keep sanity checked). |
