Work in collections in England, Germany and nationally
BFA- Philadelphia College of Art (now known as the University of the Arts)
---The photograph is of some of my palette knives. As you can see, they are all bending to the left. As I work the surface of a large canvas I tend to beat the hell out of even the sturdiest of knives. I also use razor blades and anything else handy to scratch into the surface or move the paint around.
My new body of work is drifting toward limited palettes. It is more subdued than the California body of work. The paintings are more about atmosphere, air quality, certain times of the day, the senses. Water is a re-occuring theme for me, as is the weather.
The smaller works from 2006 are mostly weather related. Working small is a different challenge than working big. When I work a large canvas I can "lose" myself in the work. Working small I am always aware of the piece and my surroundings, there is no surrender. It is a different type of discipline. The speed is slower, the approach more deliberate. I prefer working larger scale (usually 44x66 inches) and working multiple canvases at the same time. The pieces often relate to each other.
I am readjusting to using oils since using oils in Florida is not the same as using oils in California. My studio space is a converted garage. I had 2 skylights and 7 windows along with a sliding glass door installed. Because it is Florida, I've shared the space with black widow spiders, brown widow spiders, palmetto bugs, small lizards, geckos and one black rat snake. I do miss the 2nd story loft space I had in California...never once encountered a snake there.
