Artist Statement for Iris Lavy

Painting to me is about the experience of transformation. The spirit of creating art is always a manifestation of being and becoming one with the true life force/ Tao/ God/ nature or however you would like to call the source of creation that is within us all.
I'm a former musician, and a lot of music is involved in my painting, revealed in some musician's images and portraits, but mainly through the sense and awareness of flow, rhythm, harmony and line that I experience in my work. I find the two art forms very similar, although existing in completely different dimensions, using different mediums and materials, applying to different senses. Painting and music, as well as any form of art, are very similar in essence, the differences are only in the manifestation of that essence.
I believe a lot of the music discipline is still at the roots of my painting practice. As an artist, just like when I was a musician and played classical compositions as well as jazz improvisation, etudes and scales, I feel the different kinds of paintings I make nourish the development of my other paintings on all levels. I paint abstracts, but my figurative work helps me sharpen the eye-to-brain-to-hand connection. I love running free in the fields of abstract painting, but also feel the need to sit quietly by the pond and focus on painting exactly what I see in front of me. Art is my passion and my love, and as long as I am able to practice it, I am grateful.
