Artist Statement for Jonathan Hobson

My goal in creating art is to make a connection with my subject and make an artistic expression in a multi-dimensional form. I convey that connection to the viewer while exploring my emotional response through color, texture and shape. Whether I am painting a person or drawing a vivid landscape, I want to feel the subject as I create an expression to the viewer about my subject and allow those feelings to flow through the medium that is chosen. People are my favorite, probably because I feel a real connection to their soul and personality when I paint them. Acrylic, Watercolor and Pastel is my mediums of choice. I love the spontaneity and rich color possibilities that these mediums offer me plus the control that I can convey over my subjects.

The initial layering of transparent colors on watercolor paper or illustration board begins the process. After pouring the colors, moving them together and applying textured objects for variety, I let the first layer dry. What is revealed is sometimes a revelation, and a sense of harmony. I enjoy working in stages and often times work several under paintings before coming back to work into them. When a direction is recognized, I will move with the piece in one of my favorite mediums upon my paper guided by my senses to offer a viewer's interpretation rather than artistic documentation. Upon completion, I feel a sense of fulfillment as I gaze on the final work that shares my soul through my artistic creation.
