Artist Statement:
It is clear Arthur’s interest in the absurd, humor, the wildly imaginative, can be seen in his art even before he began his studies at San Francisco's Academy of Art, from which he graduated with a BFA in 1978. His work has been mostly described as surreal, fantastic, visionary. Arthur’s work reflects his respect for a range of artists, from Edgar Allen Poe to Elvis Costello, from Delacroix to the outsider genre, from rock and roll to jazz and the classics. Wordplay interests him, and sometimes he translates humor and the eccentric onto canvas. There are stories in his paintings, though maybe without a beginning or an end....and sometimes there doesn’t need to be one. His mastery with the brush when depicting the most awesome aspects of nature, the sea and water is no less remarkable than his imagination.

Artist Reviews:
Arthur Bell has a series of stunningly beautiful paintings, loose in execution, harmonious in coloring, that gives the viewer entry into a very personal world. His Coming of the Lord is a witty, original and comic piece. The archangel knitting while awaiting the arrival of the Lord is just one...
