Artist Statement for Crystal Warlitner

I am an artist. I follow my intuition to create layer by layer. I am a layerist. The focus of my work is collage. By layering components of experiences, environments and people, I express the complexities of life. Most of the collages I construct are non-representational, allowing the viewer to extract ideas stimulated by the work to apply their own interpretations. Typically refraining from realistic detail and the expression of emotion, I stress abstract form at the expense of pictorial elements. I disclose enough reality to supply a tension between the real world and the strata of images portrayed. The layers are a dimensional experiment with structure. I construct the subject matter in relief with geometric two and three-dimensional shapes. There is precision within the composition. It is ordered, minimal, spatial and architectonic. Favoring a monochromatic palette, my current series focuses primarily on the structure of the composition. Using recycled materials, primarily cardboard, paper, wood, and fabric, I transform elements into a physical object. I am a collagist, and my source is pure abstraction. I invite the viewer to dwell on individual shapes, explore individual units within the frame or experience the overall texture and harmony of the whole work. Layer by layer.
