Artist Reviews:
Exhibit features large-scale works with religious themes
You can’t help but think of Salvador Dali when you meet Steven Kelso. There’s the mustache, sure. But also that rollicking mind that can’t help but leap from one seemingly tangential non sequitur to the next.
There’s a ...

Artist Statement for Steven Kelso
|
|
|
Most artists use their abilities as a way to express their emotions, thoughts and beliefs to the community of artists and art observers. Certainly, this is most true for Indianapolis, Indiana artist Steven Kelso. Much of the highest praise for artists is applied to those who speak their mind boldly and are not intimidated in working against the status quo of the art world. While Mr. Kelso works firmly within the many traditions of art, his particular subject matter of religious iconography can definitely be called bold for an artist in the highly secular world of modern art. There is enthralling religious content available to those who follow the faith and those who are interested by the stories of Christianity. Likewise, those who do not follow religious art closely still find Mr. Kelso alluring because of the gorgeous figuration and ethereal coloration. As one might expect, there is praise for Mr. Kelso's work, coming from both the religious and secular art viewer.
Mr. Kelso's visual style both incorporates and varies from the tradition of Christian imagery. Many of his paintings are depicted in the visual mode of the stained-glass window. In the history of the Christian Church, stained-glass window art functions as a method of educating the followers who may not been able to read. Therefore, Mr. Kelso's art both continues the storytelling technique in his art and also pays tribute to the history of stained-glass art. Conversely, Mr. Kelso also adapts his art with the influence of modern and post modern art. The echoes of Dali, Bacon and Picasso can be clearly seen.
These are paintings both religiously fertile and artistically exceptional.
Mr. Kelso has exhibited his paintings throughout the United States as well as internationally, most notedly in Paris, France-Turin, Italy-Tokyo, Japan-Brussels, Belgium. Steven Kelso is represented worldwide by the Amsterdam Whitney International Fine Art Gallery in New York.
