Artist Statement for David G Schneider

A native of Kentucky and a registerd architect, David's first career is in architecture. David received his bachelor of architecture from the University of Kentucky and his master of architecture from the School of Art and Architecture at the University of California at Los Angeles.

David passed on his knowledge while teaching at the Teatro Olimipico in Vicenza, Italy and as while assistant professor of architecture at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. This architecture influence is obvious in the configuration of his sleek, contemporary oil lamps, which he began experimenting with in 1995.

All lamps have been born out of a desire to study the wicking capability of a wick and the characteristics of the steel, brass, aluminum, glass and oil resistant tubing used in them.

The tall lamps are mainly the results of these studies.

David's influences include constructivist, minimalist, shaker, Bauhaus and DeStijl. He has exhibited work in Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky and Los Angeles, California.

Many of David's oil lamps are based on building concepts that he has designed.
