Artist Statement for Konnie Kim

I usually start my paintings with thumbnail sketches or photographs. At this stage my logical and mathematical left brain comes in handy. I am mainly concerned with the composition and color scheme. Then the right brain kicks in its contribution. I put my sketches and photos away and let the painting lead the rest of the way. The painting will tell me when it's happy and when it's not. I follow my gut and give the painting what it needs. When we are both finally happy, I sign the painting. When I am in the "zone", it's like meditating…time and thoughts go away…I am totally in the moment…nothing else matters...like a runner's high…I can stay high for a few days just from a few hours of painting and it's not from turpentine!

I have an appreciation for all forms and styles of the creative process whether it's art, music or dance. For me, it must have a good balance of technical mastery, creativity and passion. I learn from many sources including traveling, different views, religion, personalities, and divergence of cultures and rules. Sometimes they teach me what to do and many times what not to do. I listen and watch, analyze and sort, and then decide what to keep and practice what makes sense to me. I do this in the art process as well as in life.

Like most artists, I feel most alive when I am creating. I enjoy sharing the things I create and the knowledge I have gained in the process. My gift to the world is to touch people's hearts through the love and passion I put into my art. That gives me purpose. When I feel out of balance, I go out to nature to feel centered again.
