Artist Statement for Laura Z Miller

Laura Z
I have been an artist my whole life, working in many
media: visual, performing, and literary. My formal
education consists of a B. A. in English (Writing),
a minor in acting and film, and a liberal salting
of studio art classes. As a visual artist, I
gravitate to mixed media, from acrylic paint, ink,
and oil pastels to found objects.
My pet project has been to develop my own experimental medium, which was inspired by the local abundance of colorful minerals and gemstones in western North Carolina. I began by collecting colored mineral and earth samples, such as red and yellow ochre, charcoal,
mica, talc, etc. From this limited palette I began to experiment with a durable acrylic as a binder. Now, my palette has expanded by including harder minerals, found locally and around the world: I now have dozens of colors in every hue, including blues and purples. "Earth Paint" is a highly textured (and sparkly!) kind of primitive paint, a modern twist on an ancient idea, where cave painting meets canvas.
I am available for portraits, art instruction, astrological advice,
and commissioned work.
