Attila Orbán int he Olof Palme House on Thursday, 13 September
At this time, int he autumn of 2007, a topical question is posed: „Is modernity our antiquity?” this being one of the principles of Dokumenta 12, an international exhibition of artworks to be concluded in Kassel, Germany, in a few weeks. The works of art by Attila Orbán are worthy to be exhibited int hat city, int he middle of Germany,because involuntarily they answer the above question int he most up-to-date fashion.
It was Classical Avantgarde that incorporated into European artistic consciusness tribal art, regarded as primitive and naive at the time,attaching high importance to masks as a visual element, ceremonial paraphelmalia and objets d’art. It is this image-making tradition that Attila Orbán resumes and reinterprets by directly or symbolically effecting changes to abstracted shapes of the eyes and mouths on masks.It is sacred objects, i. e. those whose history covering far and wide space, as well as a long time can be learnt in the major museums of our planet, that establish a relationship between art, sacredness an d human life on ordinary days.
