Artist Statement:
The influence of the bird originates in my childhood. My Grandparents had a wooded plot of land where birds would migrate, nest and frolic
and as a child I would survey and wonder what if we had these attributes. How would we look and exist in this or a world similar to ours?
My early works, consisted of transfer and collage imagery dealing with the zoomorphic ideas between human and bird lifeforms.
Various forms took root in my art where there were human heads on bird bodies and vise versa.
I came to dislike the Human headed figures that in art are historically known as Alkonosts or Harpey because of there negative connotations.
I began to work diligently on my figures with bird heads because of there Fantastic, surreal and fairy tale qualities
and moved away from the collage and transfer aspects of production and began focusing on drawing the figures.
These became what I call my Avisapien. A play on words where human and avian are combined like
my zoomorphic imagery to create a creature and name with both attributes.
My current work continues with these ideas and techniques as well as developing them further in a sculptural and

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
When I was a child I would draw outside the lines when I was given a coloring book. My grand mother then started giving me copies of blank paper and I would draw anything I say or imagined. She always said you must be an artist, and know I would have to agree...I guess I didn't become an artist I just was as is any true artist we are born not made. |

| Your Personal Biography |
I was born from a bue and speckled egg in the small nest of Logansport, In.
I grew up in one of the Liberal-Democratic Families which were rare in this nest. I was always surrounded by nature and bizarre people so I guess this helped in my liking of the bizarre and surreal. When in High School I always took art classes since these were I felt the most comfertable and where I excelled the most. After High School I went to a small college in the southern region of Indiana. I was accepted into the art department there BUT the town was oppressive and sent me into flights of fancy. When I was done there I decided to take a hiatus and migrate away to the east coast and ended up landing in a larger nest called Portland ME. It was interesting but since I only migrated when I wanted my feathers got very cold in the winter and I decided that this was no a good nesting place and I packed my eggs and migrated back to indiana, eventhough the witers there were not any better. When I finally arrived back in Indiana I ended my long migration in W. Lafayette. I worked at a ploomage shop called Amused Clothing. I worked and collected a few seeds and then eventually migrated again to Fort Wayne, IN. where I began my education again at St. Francis University and then transfered to Indiana-Purdue Universities. This is where I recieved my BFA.
I am now again migrating around the United States with My significant other.I continue to do my art while traveling and find things where ever we are located to influence me in my art. |
