Artist Statement for Robert Allen Hoffman

The influence of the bird originates in my childhood. My Grandparents had a wooded plot of land where birds would migrate, nest and frolic
and as a child I would survey and wonder what if we had these attributes. How would we look and exist in this or a world similar to ours?
My early works, consisted of transfer and collage imagery dealing with the zoomorphic ideas between human and bird lifeforms.
Various forms took root in my art where there were human heads on bird bodies and vise versa.
I came to dislike the Human headed figures that in art are historically known as Alkonosts or Harpey because of there negative connotations.
I began to work diligently on my figures with bird heads because of there Fantastic, surreal and fairy tale qualities
and moved away from the collage and transfer aspects of production and began focusing on drawing the figures.
These became what I call my Avisapien. A play on words where human and avian are combined like
my zoomorphic imagery to create a creature and name with both attributes.
My current work continues with these ideas and techniques as well as developing them further in a sculptural and
installation types of production and representation with future focus on photograhic documentation of sculpture and installation.
My media is varied or mixed media,I feel that it lends to my creative aspects and allows me as an artist to express myself to the fullest.
I tend to use Oil Paint (Old Holland,Williamsburg and Windsor Newton-Alkyds), watercolor, china marker, oil stick,
silverpoint, Graphite, color pencil, pen and ink, spray paint, femo clay, plastic dolls and assorted fiber materials.
My techniques and production are but are not limited to Collage, Fumage, Grattage, Sufflage Frattage, Decalcomania, Drawing, Painting,
Sculpture, Photography and Timed Site Specific Installations (nature preserves, city and state parks)
