Artist Statement for Jason Passeno

One is not defined simply by their chosen

craft, or profession; I am not my art, and

my art is not defined by whatever labels

the galleries, the representatives, or the

critics assign it; Whether it be, Outsider

Art, Surrealism, or Neo-Expressionism.

Although all of these labels have at one

point, or another, been applied to my

work, that is not the sum and total of my

art.
Likewise, psychotic, lazy, hermit, and

talented, are all labels and stereotypes

that have been applied to me at one time,

or another, throughout my life. I think of

these labels as degradations of the true

spirit of myself and my chosen mode of

expression. Simply put, they are insulting.

I am not defined by my suffering, by my

mental, nor by my physical health , or by

my handicaps or by my abilities, ;

Therefore, I reject all labels,

classifications, groupings, or what- not.

Do not ask me to define myself, or to

define my work. I simply will not answer.

Like me, my art is what it is. And it will

remain so. Unique and true to its form.

I ask the viewer to do one thing as they

look upon my work;
Divorce yourself of all preconcieved

notions about me, art in genereal, and

everything you know about beauty. Empty

yourselves of the need to catagorize and

fit everything you percieve into a tightly

organized and neat little group. Forget

about forming opinions and making

judgements: Abstain from the tendecies to

compare my work to that of other artists.

Simply experience it as you would when

seeing something alien, or foreign for the

first time. This will, I feel, make for an

enriching viewing experience.I ask this of

you humbly: After all, I put an extreme

amount of effort, work, creativity, and

caring in the work in which you will view.

I ask that you in turn, please return this

respect. Thank you.

As a side note, my work may seem pricey

by the standards of some; But please bear

in mind that the physical act of making

Art is expensive. Imagine the years of

training I had from early childhood

through to my college years , and the

amount of money that was spent on

lessons, classes, and art supplies. Now,

imagine the years of time it took, outside

of these classes and instruction, in which I

practiced and developed my skills.

Imagine all the work I either gave away,

or threw out because it was in no way

acceptable to the standards of a

professional artist. Also in my case, as in

the case of many other artists, I had to act

as my own marketing agent, booking my

own exhibitions, (By no means an easy

task )paying my own fare to many

far-away locations, in addition I had to act

as my own web designer/webmaster for

my site, my own accountant, and even as

my own lawyer at times. Besides this, I

have to work at different jobs (mostly

freelance) just to support myself and my

art. When one considers the amount of

time, research, and work involved in each

and every piece of work I produce, it

should start to make more sense and seem

more reasonable. I am a professional, and

this is my occupation.

As such, think of it as this;
I am Victor Frankenstein, and these are my

little monsters that I have unleashed upon

an unsuspecting world... Enjoy
