Artist Statement for Karen Balon

I am an intuitive artist as opposed to a tortured one. I don’t see things bizarrely, strangely or contorted. Instead, I see things realistically with all their beauty and splendor intact. The goal of my art is not to solve the worlds or my problems or send a political message, nor is it intended to be psychotherapy. My goal is to capture the essence of my subject, to show it’s inner beauty, to bring back fond memories of a beloved pet, to draw you into the work and memorize you for a time, to awe you with it’s life-likeness, to create a peaceful moment in a crazy day, and to fascinate you with the use of dyed wool strips instead of paint. I thrive on using color and texture in the creative process. My passion to capture the beauty, essence, emotion and uniqueness in each piece drives me to push the envelope and go beyond the rug hooking boundaries.
I was born to hook; pulling thousands of tiny loops using narrow 100% hand-dyed wool strips as my paint. I don’t use the traditional paint mediums as I am uncomfortable with them and cannot bring out the true essence of my subject as I can with wool.
My unique wool shading technique allows me to create life-like artwork that can be cherished by the affluent and discerning collector for generations to come. I welcome you to take a moment from your hectic day to browse through my gallery at www.artinthewool.com and let some beauty, joy and peace into your life.
Best wishes,
Karen
