Artist Statement:
As an independent, self-representing artist, my goal is to provide quality artwork that can be afforded by all. I won't go on about what schools of art or artists have inspired me or what my "expression" is for my work - I paint what is beautiful to me, and what others find beautiful, and offer it to share. I find much of today's "art" lacking in both aestetics and a natural connection to our world; it seems to me like paint on a canvas, and brings no picture to mind of a flower we have seen or a person we have met, no stirring of our memories or our senses. In our rushed and busy world, perhaps we have stopped truly "seeing" all of creation around us, and if it is possible, I would like my work to stand as snapshots of living moments, recreated with delicacy and simplicity, for all who see to understand and enjoy....

One day I visited the Metropolitan Museum of art, and walked into an exhibition of Pierre-Paul Prud'hon. I have never been the same. |

| Your Personal Biography |
My name is Diane Kraus, and I'm an artist.
In this day and age, as in ages past, being an artist means a great many things, some quite humble and others quite elevated. I consider being an artist a trade, like many which entail creating beautiful things. My goal is to create beautiful things, beautiful pictures and images that convey meaning, emotion, imagination, and honesty, independent of their final purpose.
I have been a professional artist for over eight years. My foundation lies in drawing, working with pencil and paper to produce form out of line and shading. I have worked with oil paint, acrylics, watercolors, charcoal and pastel, airbrushing, and finally digital painting programs. Over the years I've found that different media are much like different musical instruments, and once one learns the scales, tones, and intervals between notes, any can be used to create music without much difficulty in learning. Digital painting, however, is simply immensely powerful and versatile as an artistic medium, not to mention a good deal less messy!
With any medium and with any project, my dedication lies in two aspects of artistic creation: First, a dedication to the subject matter, whether it is an abstract design meant for a logo or a detailed, realistic portrait of a beloved pet. I refuse to do less work than the subject matter requires or deserves. Second is a dedication to the purpose of the work. If the work is meant to decorate the home, I will design it to be decorative. If it is meant to grab the viewer's attention as an advertisement, I will create a bold graphic design to suit that purpose. Although I continue to develop my own style, I always hope to incorporate it subtly into my artwork, so that the subject and the purpose of the work shines through.
My education in the arts began with a smattering of drawing books in my youth, and much time spent bent over the sketchbook page. I studied books on drawing techniques, working with form, shading, perspective and proportion at an early age. Betty Edward's Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain became my artistic bible after I discovered it at age 13, teaching me to see what I draw and draw what I see. I was then and remain still drawn towards the Classical technique, working with true-to-life proportion, natural compositions, and a careful, realistic use of light.
After drawing and painting on my own for many years, I made the decision to attend classes and found that pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Graphic Design suited my current goals. By studying Graphic Design, not only do I gain insight into modern design and creative approaches for branding, publishing and corporate design, but I also polish my skills in drawing, color theory and composition. Attending since January 2008, I have remained on the President's List and have been featured as a profiled student in the EDMC Online Higher Education Newsletter.
Since 2001 my artwork has been commissioned and bought by various private collectors and organizations, including the Southeast Region Civil Air Patrol and the 32 TFS USAF. My 2004 painting 'We Were There', painted in honor of the CAP first-responders to the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001, was presented at the 2004 Southeast Region Conference to be hung in their Pentagon office. The creation of this painting was certainly a memorable point in my aviation art career. I have also created art for aircraft model kits, veteran's calendars, and have had my work published in Flight Journal.
Outside of my artistic pursuits, I do my best to keep an eye on current technology, earning my CompTIA A+ certification in personal computer hardware and operating systems in 2006. Having a background in computers has allowed me to keep my own hardware and software up-to-date, with measures in place to prevent data loss and ensure communications between myself and clients. I also enjoy a good video game here and there, and World of Warcraft definitely is one of my top pastimes! I'm also a member of an online role-playing and creative writing community, which keeps me busy with new stories and artistic inspiration.
At home in a quiet little corner of Northeastern Pennsylvania, I enjoy cooking, good music, and two lovely cats. I'm blessed to be surrounded by nature, and believe wholeheartedly that living a simple life helps to bring beauty and honesty to my work. |
