Artist Statement for Barbara Rapp

Human beings exist between the contradictory contexts of expectations and self-fulfillment. This is especially true for women, who in their daily existence, more or less have their roles as men do, despite the social contradictions, yet, there is a question; what is the woman’s position? What are her means of stabilizing self-conception as a female? Considering women’s nature being different to manhood, do women really have to suppress and deny all their specific facets, of being female, to exist (e.g. to keep her career)!?

My questions are not set to deliver answers. Rather to help viewers to observe, listen, feel, get the sense of it, search and think that they, too may find the answers!

Through my artwork, the original theme is reflected and carried forward. Mainly, my subject is influenced and inspired by social developments, artists such as Frida Kahlo or Maria Lassnig, and public figures, who are active politically and socially. Also, my subject matter is influenced by personal environment such as family, friends and business contacts. The intention is not to receive answers but to perceive, pay attention to and feel states and processes of changes mostly, referring to those unique individuals.

I also, would like to express common socio political and economic developments, current events and impressions respectively my own view of these, through images of persons (e.g. the abstracted self-portrait). In some cases there is need, with the necessary courage, to portrait them ugly.

Within certain series, it is also a fascinating approach to extract different moods and conditions of the same people, whether others or myself, and put them into the intended context: thematically appropriate – art & economy – social fabric – interaction of powerful and powerless; with the main focus on single individuals.

My style is not the pure realistically, painted images. But the reconstruction, exposure of sentiments, exaggerated in colors and styles. Portraits, from time to time, may appear loudly screaming. Depending on the topic is being dealt with; I complementarily, may capture them graphically, in sculptural or in modern lyrics to keep the interdisciplinary possibilities of expression open.
