Artist Statement:
THEME OF ARTWORK:
Barbara Smiley-Adler's
sculptures depict people who
are in the process of
"living", complete with the
flaws and imperfections that
develop from doing so. Her
sculptures all exhibit the
awareness of people who
comfortably inhabit every
bulge, wrinkle and crease;
whose bodies have developed
both unique character and
personality, and show a
sensual satisfaction with the
life they are living.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
Since I was very young, I have
found great satisfaction by
creating art that truly
illustrates the realism that I
see. The years I have spent as
an Art Therapist, counseling
and guiding many suicidally
depressed clients to a
happier, more positive state
of mind has, I believe, given
me a real window into the
human soul. The sculptures I
create are of people who
"illustrate that journey".
