| Your Personal Biography |
This is my story...
My interest in art was born into me. My grandmother was a painter, a graduate of Pratt Institute back in the 1920's, who also studied at the Art Students League in NYC. In her home was her studio which I found to be a magical and enchanting place to visit. My mind
flowed with creativity upon entering.
Interestingly, although I have painted in both pastel and oils throughout
my life, I didn't really become seriously involved in painting until
the mid 1990's after the death of my grandmother. Now I have many
questions for her that, regrettably, I will never be able to ask.
My earliest recollection of creating anything was at about the age of five.
Using my rounded little school scissors and that smelly school paste and some
paper I made a three dimensional Santa with sled and reindeer reigned to the
sled. My mother was so impressed she saved it, and I still remember
the expression on her face when she saw it.
My love of the coastal areas also began in childhood, summers spent at the
New Jersey shore are wistfully recalled. Recently I learned that part of my heritage, several generations back, was being related to a pirate named Marmaduke from Smith Island area of the Chesapeake Bay. This explains
my fascination with sailing vessels and the sea, one of my favorite subjects
to paint, not to mention that my present 'shore house ' is a sailboat.
In the early years I explored many different media, from clay to metal
before landing on painting as my true passion. For almost a decade I designed and created one of a kind jewelry in silver and gold, both hand wrought and cast, which was sold through local shops. I also completed many commissioned pieces.
If asked to categorize my style I would say it is representational, meaning the subject is recognizable, and in a painterly fashion, that up close the paint is loosely applied with visible brushstrokes.
My subject matter is decided by my gut reaction to a scene, when it grabs
me passionately I have to paint it. The subtlety of some little part may be all it takes.
Frequently I have been told that my work has a soft relaxing quality,
a calming effect, which to me is so important in today's hectic world.
