Artist Statement for Susan Barnes

I paint from life to find the truth in the subject, its soul. It could be the light and the way it reflects and touches form, or the way air looks and moves around solid forms, or color and the way it looks in light and shadow or at a turn. Translucent and reflective objects are often included in my paintings. Both cause light and form to bend and twist, creating another layer, a visual duality.
2005 My current focus is sailboats and the NJ coastline. Working from photo references taken myself I can transport myself back to the scene, combining and changing until the scene works as a painting.
2003 doing landscapes. In particular the landscape of southern New Jersey. There is much beauty to be explored in the areas surrounding my home. The area is so varied from farmland to pineland to ocean shores.
2002 I devoted to exploring the still life, mainly working in my studio. Its nature allows for prolonged study in a controlled environment. Initially, I am attracted by shape or contrast or color relationship. Next I choose the support and decide whether flat application of paint or thick impasto would best suit the subject. Oil is my chosen medium. The support on which I paint is usually stretched canvas but linen, wood, paper are sometimes used. I do not do any preliminary sketches before painting, preferring to work out placement and value directly on the support. If I sketch the subject first I feel I lose some of the freshness of my response to the subject.
