Artist Statement for Jennifer Barnett Hensel

My work focuses on the interaction of personal relationships, memories and the way in which these things can be translated into visual forms. The interplay of personal connections, experience and recollection allows one to realize how time impacts the individual and how ones reflection allows past events to remain in a state of flux. My goal is to create work that sparks memory, inspires conversation and leads to thought beyond the work itself. Through these visual examinations, the circle becomes a language of repetition and meditation- it is an abstract form that allows for open analysis. However, for me, the circle is a quantified object that has the ability to symbolize my own personal relationships and experiences, yet allows the viewer to place his or her own understanding within the work. I feel that art can be the means to transform a situation or an object by placing it in a new context. In this new format, one has the opportunity to consider the every day in a new way.
