Artist Statement:
There are vivid memories of the very last of the steamboats and locomotives that will remain forever fresh in my mind. Steamboats especially, are creations that one must experience first hand to appreciate because they go beyond being simply visual events; they impact all the senses. The smell of coal burning, lubricating oil, heat and the pressure of vibration all swirled into a dynamic force of motion.
When I paint steamboats, I experience them. The same is true for sail. I want my renderings to call out from the canvas to step aboard and come along for the ride; to say this is how it was when our grandfathers and their fathers were alive. If those elements could exist as color on my palate, my work would be easy but since they do not I must continue to work hard to master bringing them alive with only oil and canvas.
