Artist Statement:
Artistic creations, whether they are paintings, sculpture, hand-designed crafts, music, etc. rarely exist in a vacuum. It is the culmination of an artist’s experiences that become part of an artist’s latest work, whether they are incorporated in a work or not, they are still there by omission.” (...

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
Will Henry Stevens was an abstract expressionist that taught at Tulane University where one of my sons Mike went. I was so impressed by his paintings he has been a favorite and an inspiration ever since. He also was a teacher that only went to two teacher meetings in his long career - how great is that! Instead, he would be seen riding around New Orleans on his bike with plein aire equipment on his back. |

| Your Personal Biography |
Johanna Littleton, an artist from Decatur, works primarily in acrylic and mixed media. Johanna’s message in her paintings is for people to “stop and really look at the people you meet each day”.
Her series "Families of Man" is the result of a chance meeting with a 93-year-old woman in a bazaar in Esfahan, Iran in 1977. For nearly 15 years, that moment when two women seemed to bridge the gap of age, culture and language kept returning to her. These thoughts culminated in this series.
To a woman from the West, women in the Middle East are literally faceless because of the robes they must wear, if mandated by their social or religious culture. Western women are faceless because we run past each other at our frantic pace. "The message of my paintings to stop and really look at the people you meet each day,"
Many of her works have an underlying feel of the Orient or Middle East because she lived in Java, Indonesia and Esfahan, Iran. “It is impossible to be immersed in a different culture without absorbing some of the sights, sounds and colors. All of these have become part of my being, thus, my art.”
She has lived in Decatur since 1982 with her husband. Larry, where they raised their six sons . She worked as the graphics design editor/illustrator for the Decatur Daily for seven years, taught art K-8 at St. Ann’s school and is now teaching Graphic Design at Calhoun Community College when she is not painting or at an art show. |
