Artistic creations, whether they are paintings, sculpture, hand-designed crafts, music, etc. rarely exist in a vacuum. It is the culmination of an artist’s experiences that become part of an artist’s latest work, whether they are incorporated in a work or not, they are still there by omission.” (Johanna Littleton, Decatur Daily, 1996)
The joys, struggles, adventures and camaraderie I shared with people from around the world is what I choose to illustrate. People are assaulted with stimuli in modern societies and, yet, in the midst of the frantic movement of today, modern man is so isolated at times. This paradox is also an underlying theme in my works. When someone walks up to one of my paintings and says “This is me” or “I know who these people are,” I feel I have successfully portrayed a human value or feeling that links humanity across cultural divisions.
When reading about the struggles of Van Gogh, in what is described as his pre-painting career, and his efforts to help the poor, one can see the passion he felt for humanity emerging into his drawings of “Potatoes Farmers.” It is this passion for people, not only his use of color and dynamic movement in his paintings, that is an influence on my work. I have used stillness to create implied tension between the people/places represented,.
With an eye to longevity as well as beauty, I have chosen acrylic as the main medium in many of my paintings. But because I will use whatever I feel is necessary to produce the end result; watercolor, oil and pastel mixed with mediums, and collage have all been part of the experimentation in these paintings. Acrylic is the main medium because of its ability to be blended, glazed, mixed to a myriad of colors both bright and muted.
It was interest in body language that led to this series. I wanted to demonstrate that the body’s attitude could illustrate man’s interactions and feelings, as well as, facial expressions - thus, the faceless-people evolved. As a by-product of this, an enigmatic quality of mystery is produced in each painting.
I believe viewers are able to read themselves and others they know into many of my paintings. As an artist, I find this the ultimate complement - artist and patron join to give meaning to a work.
