Artist Statement:
Bernadette Badali was born in Toronto, Canada in 1963. She is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and the University of Guelph, where she explored painting and photography. She continues to work in these two mediums, focusing on textures in nature and architecture as the subject matter.
"These paintings explore my fascination with texture, while looking to nature and its surfaces as the inspiration. I have learned that tactile surfaces in nature are formed through a process of growth and layering. I borrow this method to build the organic forms in the composition using fabrics and papers with different qualities. I structure the forms within the painting, but the surface area, such as folds and ripples, are created randomly through the flexibility of the materials, further imitating nature's process. Since I am using physical materials like guaze, string and paper, I am able to construct images that are more sculptural and consequently, even more textural! Once I have built the composition, I use oil paint to add further texture, colour and personal expression to the environment that I have created." ...
