Bernadette MacCormick (b.1969)
I have rarely seen an artist who can draw with such accuracy and style, as Bernie MacCormick. Her mastery of pencil, and pen and ink is just awesome. What is even more unusual, is that she draws with such feeling. Rembrandt would be delighted with a ...

My work deals with my ongoing concern of trying to marry drama with harmonious composition, primarily in the area of portraiture. I am currently investigating this with particular interest in the elderly. I enjoy the company of older people and whilst I see poignancy and seek atmosphere, I try to avoid sadness. I do, however, attempt to both capture and therefore, provoke emotion.
I illuminate my subjects using a variety of techniques and from a variety of angles to achieve different moods, which can help to more clearly display the individuals character. But my investigations are most successful when my subjects are lit from a dramatic angle enabling me to see drama and pursue the chiaroscuro effect so successfully employed in the past. I reference the work of Caravaggio and Reubens from an historical view point and from a contemporary perspective, the work of Ewan Uglow, Lucien Freud and Frank Auerbach are of particular interest to me.
When I am nearing the end of an artwork, as I can see more and more clearly how the piece is manifesting, I let it evolve altering it according to my personal engagement with the concept. This is the stage at which I get a feeling of exhilaration and excitement, as I can see that I have achieved what I set out to. Also, the viewers initial reactions are usually evidence of this and that is extremely rewarding to me.
My practice is a diverse mix of media, from photography to drawing with pen, pencil, charcoal, pastels, also, painting in oils, tempera and watercolour.
