NCLAC, PINEY HILLS WELCOME NEW ARTISTS
•News
By: April Honaker associate director of the North Central Louisiana Arts Council.
Beverly Dudley and Margie Bottoms were recognized and honored as new artists at a reception
The North Central Louisiana Arts Council held a reception for new and returning artists in its Piney Hills Gallery from.
The reception for “Wintery Masterpiece Mix” was held inside the gallery, which is located in the foyer of the Dixie Center for the Arts, located at 212 N. Vienna St.
Piney Hills Gallery, a project of NCLAC, is a consignment sales gallery for original works of art from approximately 30 artists and crafts people in north central Louisiana.
Inventory ranges from the fine arts of oil and watercolor painting to the contemporary crafts of pottery and jewelry making to the more traditional folk crafts of basketry and quilting.
Following its recent semiannual meeting of the selection committee, NCLAC will introduce and honor two new regional artists who’ve been juried into the gallery: Margie Bottoms of Bienville and BEVERLY DUDLEY of Ruston.
Bottoms creates representational artwork characterized by still lifes and landscapes. She is inspired by the region.
Dudley, too, creates still lifes and landscapes, but her primary focus is portraits, which she paints on commission.
She has quite a lot of experience in this realm. In fact, one of her proudest moments as a portrait artist came in 1993 when she completed a portrait of the first lady of Mississippi, Pat Fordice.
Dudley works in pencil, charcoal and oil.
She was self-taught until she and her husband moved temporarily to Bellevue, Wash., in 1985.
There she fell in love with the paintings of late Russian impressionist Sergei Bongart.
“The vibrant color palette he used seemed to glow,” she said.
Bongart inspired her, and she began to study with one of his proteges Ron Lukas at The Artist Workshop in Seattle.
Under his influence, she watched her work transform.
“I felt I’d won the Art Lotto,” she said.
Dudley shared her thoughts on being an artist and being accepted to the gallery.
“It’s always an honor when a gallery accepts your paintings, and you should treat it as such,” she said.
Dudley looks forward to the reception, as she has each time her work has been accepted to a gallery.
“You gain knowledge with every piece of art you come in contact with,” she said.
“And you are surrounded by the absolute best mixture of personalities.”
About her art, Dudley said, “My art is not a hobby.
“My art is not a job. My art is my life!”
Today, Dudley will share a piece of her life with the public, as will Bottoms and the other Piney Hills Gallery artists.
While today’s reception will offer local residents a unique opportunity to meet the gallery’s artists and get to know other area arts enthusiasts, NCLAC encourages people to stop by the gallery any time.
Business hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
April Honaker is the associate director of the North Central Louisiana Arts Council.
