| Your Personal Biography |
A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Beverly Furman has been and award-winning artist since 1960. While raising four children, she studied printmaking with Ed Porter at ODU for 3 years. She is primarily self-taught in the other media in which she is proficient, having received mentoring from Charles Sibley, A.B. Jackson, Will Reimann, Fay Zetlin and Michael Goldberg.
Beverly has exhibited Etchings & Woodcuts, Handmade Paper, Oils & Acrylics, Watercolors, Drawings, Masks and Water-based (Mixed) Media in juried shows and Outdoor Art Festivals throughout the Tidewater region and participated in invitational and traveling shows such as: Delaware Art Museum and Columbia S.C.Museum.
She has taught classes to adults and children in the above media at museums and Arts centers in the area. She currently teaches Acrylic Painting.
Ms. Furman was chosen by NEA and The Virginia Commission of Fine Arts to be Artist-In-Residence in the Virginia Beach Schools for two semesters, 1974-1976, and for the Norfolk City Schools 1985-86.
(Between 1969 and 1979 her surname was Hoddinott).
Ms. Furman’s work is in Corporate collections in Virginia, as well as public and private collections throught the state, including The Virginina Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond; The Chrysler Museum, Norfolk; The City of Virginia Beach; The City of Portsmouth; Longwood College, Farmville Va.and several Bank Headquarters. She also has work in Russia, Ukraine and England.
Beverly has had about thirty one person shows through the years, and several two-person shows. Some venues were: Chesapeake Public Library;Virginia Beach Center for the Arts (now CAC); Virginia Wesleyan College; Norfolk Academy; The Commons at Sacred Heart; River Gallery, Chesapeake; d’ART Center, Norfolk
Beverly has made over 60 Ink &Watercolor renderings of U.S.Colleges and Universities for ‘Framing Success,’ a Va. Beach firm. These include: Harvard, Princeton, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Berkeley, UCLA, Va. Tech, VMI, Chapel Hill, Brown, U. Washington, U. San Francisco, Yale, etc. She also is employed by Norfolk Parks and Recreation, teaching Acrylic Painting.
