Artist Statement:
Jennifer Morris has been
working in the traditional
embroidery technique of
counted cross-stitch for
over10 years. Her primary
focus is on the ways of
patterning. She uses the
linear aspects of counted
cross-stitch to focus on
methods of pattern making.
Inspiration comes from the
cross referencing of the
digital language of computers
and the traditional language
of the counted cross stitch,
where dot pixel in computer
terminology becomes a direct
analogy for threads per inch.
She puts a non-traditional
spin on the typical and
historic counted cross-stitch
designs. Inspired by elements
of chaos theory, fractal
geometry and the illusion of
depth, she represents these
concepts using a linear
pattern of the weave of the
cloth with variegated dyed
threads and the base fabric.
All her work is done as a
drawing with no pattern or
concept as to where the work
will take her....
