Artist Statement for Clifford Ash

I've been drawing all of my life which is thirty three years and counting. I work in all media / rendering techniques such as, Paint and Digital Illustrations. I've always been more partial to pencils and pens. I love the effect of pencil colors and pen & ink. I think that both bring the best of my talents to light. I grew up in a small town in Louisiana called Tallulah. Where I spent countless hours locked away from the outside world with my radio, paper, comic books and pencils, building my own universe of interesting characters. My older brother is an artist and so was my dad, needless to say that my talent was inherited. In 1995/96 I got my first job as an artist working for an African American alternative newspaper called the New Times as an editorial cartoonist. I only worked at that newspaper for a short time but I got a taste of what it would be like working as a paid artist , I LOVED IT! I've done hundreds of portraits and won Blue Ribbon art awards. I've studied art through self help books. I think having a unique design or a signature style of doing anything is great and inspiring. I approach my art in that way. I don't look at someone else's art and say "Wow, I wish I could draw like that". Instead, I stay with my style of art because it's a part of who I am. When a person look at my art I want them to be able to say " Hey ,that's a Clifford Ash drawing! His style is unmistakable." (whether that's good or bad)
