|
I have been exhibiting my paintings throughout the United States and Europe for some time. They are included in many collections. I like a large canvas because it gives me room to reach and to stretch. I like the act, the physicality of painting and I try to reflect that in my work. The shapes I create bend and twist, push and pull as people do. The pillars in "Bridges" support each other at the paintings focal point. My paintings are my own worlds, ones that I can control. Although my works are sometime non-representational, they like the world around us are composed of motion, light, and space. "Begin Again" is a good example of a painting in constant motion.
Another path that I take in my work reflects the shapes of the natural world. Many of my paintings are inspired by flowers, moonlight, sun, storms, mountains, etc. These paintings create another solid and sedentary; they move when the light changes and plays on their surfaces. "Skylights" is a darker painting with light, perhaps lightning coming through the clouds and lighting up a portion of the mountains, while leaving the rest in shadow.
Recently, I finished painting dance series, inspired by Alvin Ailey's Ballet "Revelations". One of my own personal joys for the last twenty years was to attend performances of Alvin Ailey's American Dance Company's ballet program. I always looked forward to seeing them perform their classic piece, "Revelations". I went whenever they danced in Pittsburgh. If they were here for two nights, I returned again to feel the ''hope, inspiration and exhilaration" it gave me.
Since I usually paint with music, I thought I might like to paint to the gospel music in the Ballet, "Revelations". As I started to paint with the music in the background, I found myself painting the movement, the flavor, and the images that lingered in my heart-memory. As I once heard the artistic director of the company Judith Jamison say, "The dance takes hold of the dancer".
Painting "Revelations" made me feel part of the dance, part of the hope and faith. It's universal theme of faith and deliverance stays on within me. It has helped me try to deal with life's challenges. As I paint these canvases, I feel a strong sense of support, of not having to cope alone with life's problems. I have coffee with "my dancers" every morning. I will miss them when they go out into the world.
It is my intent that this series create a living monument to "Revelations" as Alvin Ailey's work and art. The response to these paintings has been very positive. By request of those who wanted to purchase these paintings, I have decided to issue a limited edition re-creation on canvas using a very fine method, called Giclee (Zhee-Clay).
