Artist Statement for Rob Henderson

Rob Henderson has been interested in aviation from a very early age and has drawn and painted since he can remember. Having had no ‘formal’ training, unless you include attending 6th form college, where he always ended up doing projects with an aeronautical theme, much to the teachers despair-but it was-"more interesting than drawing bowls of fruit and ageing nude models". It was from here, while enduring the day-to-day boredom of lectures, that small black and white cartoons of various aircraft began to appear. These in turn developed into the basis of the aircraft caricatures he does today.

In December 2001 after a string of unsatisfactory jobs and a steadily increasing demand for his work, Rob quit his then current full time job and started his own aviation artwork company called ‘Caricature Aircraft Pictures’. In 2005, the business is still growing with original paintings and prints being produced for clients around the globe. While offering a selection of caricature prints of various aircraft types, the heart of the business is ability of offer a personalised caricature artwork service. Just as caricature is an extreme form of art, the personalised service is also to the extreme. “The beauty of caricature when exploited to the full is the lack of constraints, and the only real limitation is the imagination (of the customer).” Says Rob.

“The purpose of the personalised caricature is to offer a totally unique piece of work specific to an individual or group, irrespective of their background, age or whether they fly for real. The only requirement is a love of aviation.

"Although there is a hardcore element where flying is everything, there are also a great deal of people who participate & enjoy numerous other hobbies and activities. This is where I believe my caricature artwork is unique. For example, one gentleman may be connected to the warbird scene and is lucky enough to own his own Spitfire. It’s a pristine example repainted in authentic colours of a wartime squadron/particular Ace pilot. The caricature artwork can still be applied to this with a painting of this pilot/owner at the controls of the Spitfire as is.

"The same then goes to the aviation enthusiast. He may not own a Spitfire, or even know how to fly for real, but he loves the Spitfire for the beauty that she is. The same person may be an avid supporter of a particular sports team, or he may enjoy Sci-Fi films, a particular brand of beer – anything from everyday life. In this case the Spitfire caricature then becomes part of that individual. Flying painted in the shirt colours of his favourite team rather than camouflage, the brewery logo on the tail fin, his initials as the squadron codes, his DOB as the registration, the wife’s name below the canopy, the pet dog leaning out the back of the cockpit, flying over his home, while dressed up like a Klingon from the ‘Star Trek’ series. The freedom to have whatever you want, no matter how bizarre is there.”

As mentioned above, Rob’s artwork can be worked to suit all tastes, and not just for any one individual. Group caricatures on an aviation theme are also a possibility, and indeed have been created for military squadrons and flying schools. The same goes for caricature side profiles of aircraft without backgrounds or portraits of any particular individual. From caricaturing the aircraft as is for squadrons n the Air Force which are then produced as prints to sell in the unit’s gift shop, civil flying schools or private owners, to caricature profiles of someone’s favourite aircraft they fly in a computer flight simulator…. When Rob says, “Anything goes”, you’d best believe it!
