Artist Statement:
In his work over the last quarter century, noted North Carolina artist Michael Brady has concentrated on painting the human form.
In most of his paintings, there are usually one or two nude figures, and they are shown against a field of abstract geometric shapes. By doing this, Brady restricts the focus to the viewer's' reactions to the human form and their responses to the art and techniques of painting and drawing.
In the 1980s and into the early 1990s, Brady developed a significant body of geometric abstractions without figures. These paintings were a striking departure from his more well known figural style. The early abstract works had overt affiliations to those of Robert Motherwell, especially the Spanish Elegies in their use of one or two dark rectangular shapes against a lighter ground, and later to the abstract paintings of Richard Diebenkorn, notably the Ocean Park series.
It was during a beach vacation in 1983 that Brady made dozens of drawings, pastels, and studies of restricted geometric themes, and from these he eventually produced a large number of oil and acrylic paintings that extended the motifs of the rectangle, triangle, and oval.
