Artist Statement for Brenda Hofreiter

As a Florida native, I have grown up loving and living in the outdoors, so it is no suprise that plein air landscape paintings are my passion. Watching how the Florida sun transforms the world as it moves across the sky is a constant joy, and trying to capture it in paint is a constant challenge. Like the impressionists who inspire me, I work in layers of oil, wet over dry. Many visits to the same location at the same time of day are necessary to complete a painting. This allows an intimacy with the location and helps to create a sense of place in the finished piece. I use the intensity of color to excite or relax the eye, deepened shadows to create an air of mystery and timelessness, and soft edges to show atmosphere. Close-cropped views allow the viewer to share the same intimacy that I feel when I paint. Although my goals are mainly artistic, I am also aware that I am recording a rapidly vanishing time and place as more and more of the land is developed. It is my hope that my paintings will also create a desire to conserve and protect the wild places.
