Artist Statement for Brian Bruce

I paint in order to experience the exhilaration of the creative process. It's exhilarating to stand in front of a blank canvas full of potential; to experience the initial thoughts and visceral impulses that begin the process; to practice engaging with my intuitive self...trusting that each move is the "right" move. It's a game really, and each artist plays his own version. Mine involves creating chaos, and then revealing the order that lies within that chaos. The beauty of the game is that it facilitates a state of harmony between activity and receptivity, while simultaneously leading me to create a physical representation of that state. My paintings become physical manifestations of the harmony I have achieved while creating them. In addition, my work can be viewed as a reflection of my interest in evolution and self-awareness. Recent paintings focus on the relationships between component parts within systems of order. I am currently questioning how the evolution of "one" affects the "whole," and exploring the concept of autonomy within the framework of a collective.
