Artist Statement for Bridget Fahy

My new paintings revolve around scenes from the life of peasants or allegories and proverbs about the fragility of the human condition.
The landscapes glory and the human state- despair, disparate, despondent. All hidden depths of human psyche are captured in each painting, concealed emotions, hidden faces, fears obscured by large rimmed hats.
The unnatural backbreaking poses hint at the fate that awaits these land workers, slaves of the land but also lovers of the land that imprisons them. The purpose of my painting is to appeal to the emotions through aesthetic effect, blending harsh reality and dreams into colourful compositions.
There is a breadth of sensitivity and feeling to the natural surroundings. The viewer is invited in to the ‘Sowers’ Series, where the exotic and everyday mingle, partial fiction, partial reality, partial creation of a magical imaginary landscape.
The workers are the most important ingredients of my composition, the inclusion of clouds, shadows and foliage are mere props.
I find the act of painting , liberating almost a sensual experience.
I combine raw energy with blocks of colour, producing dynamic tensions of opposing marks on the surface. I add thick layers and then scrape back, creating the subject through the manipulation of paint and the surface.
Some of my paintings are reworked over several months.
Most of my paintings are blue or blue is a predominant colour in my work. It is an important colour to me conveying a sensation of freedom, an escape, via the sky or sea.
